Cynthia in India

Journey of a lifetime

She had worked out, prepped her pack, stowed her special painted rock, and read up on water quality and the geology of the region. What she hadn’t read up about, though, was breast cancer, a diagnosis she got in May, about a month before the trip. Little did she know what adventures the next months would bring, including landing her in the spotlight at Gourmet & Grapes on Kiawah where she shared her courageous journey with cancer.

Clinical Highlight

Dr. Marshall

First prostate cancer surgery using pioneering brachytherapy system done at Hollings

It was odd to be one of the first patients to receive a new treatment for prostate cancer, but if it meant the side effects would not last as long, Henry Ham was grateful to receive it.

Ham, who was treated by radiation oncologist David Marshall, M.D., at MUSC Hollings Cancer Center, says it’s been almost two months since his procedure and he’s halfway through the side effects.

“I give rave reviews about the team and Dr. Marshall. Everything’s worked well,” he says. “We’ve had our one-on-one consults, and Dr. Marshall’s been very accommodating. He takes the time to answer all my questions. It’s been a good experience, if you can call what I’m doing a good experience.”

Marshall was the first in the world to use the Blu Build real-time Cesium-131 brachytherapy (internal radiation therapy) delivery system on Oct. 26, 2018. He has since treated 12 patients.

Event Spotlight: Lowvelo

LowVelo

LOWVELO bike ride bonds community, raises funds for cancer research

LOWVELO is no ordinary bike ride. Rather, it’s a bold idea to pull the entire state together to raise funds for cancer research at a level that’s never been tried before in South Carolina, says MUSC Hollings Cancer Center Director Gustavo Leone, Ph.D.

The ride, which will be held Nov. 2 in the Lowcountry, will feature three routes (25, 50, or 100-miles) with riders committing to raise a minimum amount based on the route selected. As a peer-to-peer fundraising event, riders will solicit donations and develop fundraising activities to reach their goals with 100 percent of rider-raised dollars funding research at MUSC Hollings Cancer Center.
