Courtney poses with her family after the race

Courtney (left), ran a 5K this spring with daughter, Reagan; son, Tanner; and husband, Jeff, after her successful treatment for stage 2 colon cancer.

Research is critical to success stories like Courtney’s.

“I knew something was wrong but didn’t even consider it could have been cancer,” Courtney Nelson said. “I always considered myself super healthy. You know, I eat right. I exercise at least five times a week. I take care of myself. Why would this be something I was concerned about? Colon cancer just isn’t something you talk about when you’re my age.”

But it should be – because colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths for men and women combined.

Courtney was 38 when she was rushed into surgery for severe pain. When she woke up, she learned she had stage 2 colon cancer.

Fortunately, her Hollings Cancer Center clinical team was able to fully remove her tumor. Today, Courtney has returned to her active life.

Join us for one event or a full weekend as we fight cancer together!

Gourmet & Grapes is so much more than a fabulous weekend with James Beard award-winning chefs, renowned culinary talents, bourbon connoisseurs, world-class wines, and silent and live auctions of specialty items and one-of-a-kind experiences. You’re also supporting life-saving clinical trials, innovative research, and patient care. It’s because of support from you - our sponsors and guests - that Hollings is able to pursue research that leads to future breakthroughs in the treatment and prevention of cancer in South Carolina and beyond.
