Smith says he’s thankful for Ginger and Rosie, who run around like “crazy little jack rabbits” at night and help to take his mind off his illness.
In it for the long run
As longtime director of the Cooper River Bridge Run, Julian Smith can tell you just about all there is to know about running a race. He now faces a challenge of a different kind as he sets up a fund for glioblastoma research. Smith, who was diagnosed with brain cancer, hopes to give patients like himself better odds at beating it. Not his first bout with cancer, he says he’s in it for the long run.

Health disparities researcher chosen to deliver prominent lecture
Hollings Cancer Center researcher Chanita Hughes-Halbert, Ph.D., says she’s honored to have been selected by the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) to speak at its 11th annual conference on a topic near and dear to her heart – the science of cancer health disparities. The award brings attention to the research being done to enhance cancer health equity among racial and ethnic minorities and individuals from other medically underserved groups, she says.

Frank Talbot (front, left) never lost hope as he walked through treatment for pancreatic cancer. In his memory, his family established an endowment to continue his legacy of supporting research.
HCC hosts Talbot awareness reception
After being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, Frank Talbot immediately began treatment at Hollings Cancer Center. While traditional treatments failed, he was able to enroll in a clinical trial that added cherished days he spent with family. In his memory, his family established the Francis F. Talbot Endowment for Pancreatic Cancer Research, which supports scientific investigations and raises awareness for the work being done in this field. Patients, survivors, and family members of those who have faced a diagnosis are invited to join us Tuesday, Nov. 27, at 5:30 p.m. at Hollings Cancer Center to learn about the latest developments in research and patient care.
