Pregnant with cancer: New mom faces the unimaginable

Being six months pregnant in Charleston in July can be trying. Heather Toeppner had resigned herself to the heat. What she hadn’t counted on, though, was the cancer diagnosis. What followed was a roller coaster ride of highs and lows.

Breast cancer survivor finds her stride

No one expected Tanya Waring-Hearn to do the 41st Cooper River Bridge Run – let alone herself. Ironically, it took a diagnosis of cancer to get her there, coupled with the courage to join a wellness program where she drew strength from other survivors. “I’m a survivor, and to be able to make it over that finish line, that’s awesome.”

Hollings Cancer Center’s team won the best health innovation idea at the 1st MUSC Health Innovation Summit.

Capturing ‘Sixth Vital Sign’ wins top prize at innovation summit

The Hollings Cancer Center clinical team braved dangerous waters with Nick the Shark to vie for a $15,000 prize for the best health innovation idea during a “Shark Tank”-style competition. The winning idea was a distress screening tool that can better detect patients who are in crisis and connect them with much-needed resources.

Serving up hope for survivors

In an emotional meeting, committee members from Racquets for Recovery met breast cancer survivors participating in the Survivors’ Fit Club. The club is getting rave reviews by its participants who appreciate the support they get as they learn about wellness and nutrition as they find their new normal after cancer.
