When the wedding day dawned cold and windy, best man Kerry Hardy was just happy to have made it. He wasn’t supposed to be alive. And when, just 15 minutes before the ceremony, the clouds parted and the strong winds settled, Hardy knew that wasn’t the only miracle.

That’s what cancer prevention researcher Kathleen Cartmell, Ph.D., at Hollings Cancer Center wants everyone to know. She has made it her mission to educate people about the crisis in South Carolina, which ranks below the national average for boys and girls getting HPV vaccinations. At the same time, the state has some of the highest rates of cancer caused by HPV in the nation. With statistics like these, Cartmell has just one question to ask: If you could protect your child from HPV-associated cancer, wouldn’t you do it?

David Nelson, comedian

2018 will be Nelson's tenth year performing at the Charleston-based arts festival Piccolo Spoleto.

Actor, comedian puts cancer center stage at upcoming Piccolo Spoleto Festival

In his 10th year performing at a premier Charleston arts festival, David Nelson plans to tackle a heavy subject: living with an advanced cancer diagnosis. And, believe it or not, he’ll do it through comedy. “Cancer is such a tense topic,” the 39-year-old performer said. “It’s just asking for release. It’s just asking for comedy. Comedy also is about human beings facing things they are unequipped to handle.”
